Public Consultation for 2022-2030 Civil Aviation Policy

On the 28th of September, the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport announced that a public consultation shall take place for a proposed civil aviation policy covering the period 2022 to 2030.

This aviation policy, which was proposed in the 2021 budget, will aim to strengthen the growth potential of the aviation sector as well as increasing its economic contribution in Malta. The policy aims to provide a viable strategy by anticipating the changes that will occur in the aviation sector in the coming years.

The policy takes into account a number of important aspects of the aviation industry, including its environmental impact and long-term viability, professional and technical training for employees and the importance of innovation in the industry. Other aspects such as inter-ministerial cooperation and foreign direct investment are also considered as aspects that should be improved in order to meet the sector's growth and economic contribution targets.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Malta's aviation industry employed thousands of people and contributed over €500 million to the local economy. According to the Minister, the importance of this sector has grown, and the country will continue to push for its expansion.
