Revision of Tonnage Regulations

The amended Tonnage Regulations (Subsidiary Legislation 234.59) entered into force on September 1, 2021, through Legal Notice 165 of 2021.

The amendments introduced new definitions of both "length overall" and "hull length". New schedules were also introduced to the Regulations whereby the fourth schedule, tackling the Certificates of Survey for Maltese Fishing Vessels of 15 metres length overall to less than 24 metres length and the fifth schedule, tackling the Certificate of Survey for Maltese Ships under 24 metres length, other than fishing vessels with overall length equal or greater than 15 metres were substituted.

Additionally, the TM Measurements Guidelines for Yachts and Other Types of Vessels together with the Certificate of Survey for Maltese Ships under 24 metres in length, other than fishing vessels with an overall length equal or greater than 15, were published on the same date.

Malta-Flagged yachts and vessels with a valid Tonnage Certificate issued  prior to the 1st of September 2021, are only required to be re-measured in accordance with the requirements and interpretations listed in the guidelines, unless the yacht or vessel undergoes any modifications that may affect its dimensions and/or its type.
